What is a Biokineticist?

A Biokineticist is an exercise therapist who improves a person's physical status and quality of life through individualized assessment and the prescription of preventative or rehabilitative exercise therapy.

Biokinetics training entails four years of academic education (degree study) and two years of professional (internship) exposure. In the process, five years of training is required prior to registration as a Biokineticist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.

How can a Biokineticist help?

Cardiac Rehabilitation

(E.g. Hypertension, Coronary artery disease, stroke rehabilitation, bypass surgery rehabilitation, high cholesterol)
Patients who have suffered a by pass operation will also need to slowly return to their daily activities. The patient will have to build up their cardiovascular fitness slowly and under the supervision of a Biokineticist.

Orthopedic Rehabilitation

(E.g. Neck, shoulder, elbow, hand/wrist, back, hip, knee, and foot/ankle)
A Biokineticist helps the patient regain strength and movement in the joint after an operation. It is very important that the patient starts movement soon after an operation to ensure return of full range of movement in that joint. The patient will normally receive in-hospital physiotherapy. It is of equal importance that the strengthening phase of the rehabilitation begins once the patient returns home. It is the role of the biokineticist to return the patient to full functional strength and prepare the person for their daily activities or return to their specific sports. This practice is equipped to rehabilitate anyone from knee and hip replacements to shoulder repairs and ankle surgery.

Sports Injuries & Rehabilitation

(E.g. Rugby, swimming, cricket, golf, netball, hockey)
Injuries are a common occurrence in all sports. The Biokineticist is qualified to rehabilitate these injuries through strengthening of the supporting muscles of whichever joint or area is injured. This practice deals with allot of common knee injuries, including anterior knee pain, as well as acute injuries often associated with contact sport such as torn ligaments or cartilage. Shoulder injuries are also very common and generally respond well to exercising the rotator cuff muscles. These are of great importance in providing stability in the joint.

General Fitness

A Biokineticist looks at the overall health and fitness of an individual and prescribes the correct exercise and lifestyle changes for the patient. This practice performs health risk assessments and prescribes an exercise plan for each individual.
